We attended the presentation of the BMW 8 Series, the great novelty of BMW
The BMW 8 Series has starred the most important novelty of the brand in 2018. It is the resurgence of one of the most spectacular series in the history of the brand, a luxury sports car that is loaded with all the current technology of the brand. We got into it at the official BMW Mandel Motor dealer in Badajoz, an event in which we have revealed all the keys to the model.
It takes no more than a glance to realize that the New model German will face some of the best sports in the market. Its aesthetic of great tourism and its great capabilities, with engines of up to 530 HP, leave it in a segment where heavy weights coexist. If we stop to think for sure that the first rival that comes to mind is the Mercedes S-Class Coupe, although with a starting price of more than 160,000 euros, we can not say that it is a direct competitor. Who is it then?
Against each other
The BMW 8 Series is a coupe sedan of no less than 4,851 meters long, 1,902 meters wide and 1,346 meters high. With this body it is not as long as a BMW 5 Series, but it is much more than a BMW 3 Series. It is also not bigger than the old BMW 6 Series, and this model stayed at 4,894 meters in length. The Mercedes S-Class Coupé, one of its biggest rivals passes the five meters, finding the Mercedes E-Class Coupé a more direct rival by measures.
More civilized than hooligan
The design of the BMW 8 Series is one of its keys. Close, a few centimeters, the BMW 8 Series imposes for its slender figure and typical body of great tourism. Looking at it from the front stand out the sharp optic group and the kidneys with no space between them, a solution that is now being introduced into the brand. The air intakes of the front bumper and the long hood, which is not without nerves, end up leaving an impressive image in our retina.
However, under my point of view the BMW 8 Series wants to be more civilized than thug, rewarding the elegance strong> that the sportsmanship, at least in its series no M. And it is that I impose more the look of a BMW 4 Series.
In the profile we find all its essence, all its expression. Walking the hand from the roof to the rear is quite an experience, with the fall of the rear window as subtle as a suit at the end of the year. I like the shapes of the profile, the sports elements of this area, the high waistline and the termination of the rear part in the form of a small spoiler. For its part, the tires can be as small as 19 inches.
The rear follows the same style as the front, being sporty but not losing sight of elegance. The rear pilots elongated and thin run the entire corner of the model, starting on the side to finish well inside the boot lid. To emphasize, again, the aerodynamic elements and, in this case, the rear diffuser that discovers two exhaust trapezoidal design. Is it the best area of the BMW 8 Series? I'll leave that to your opinion ...
Everything for you
In the passenger compartment of the BMW 8 Series everything is designed for the driver.At first sight, the high perceived quality of the sports car stands out, with a dashboard where leather wraps several elements and a 10.25-inch screen that gives the technological touch. Although of course, it is not the only technology that it offers us.
One of the details that I liked most about the interior of the BMW model - with internal code G15 - is the little use of black piano as an element decorative . From my point of view, they are pieces that brighten the eyes but are more dirty than clean, something that ends up doing the opposite of what is intended. On the other hand the feeling of firmness of the pieces of the dashboard is another point in favor, not listening to creaks or feeling little firmness when touching them.
Limited in space, although that already you knew
Sitting in the driving position of the BMW 8 Series you can feel the same feeling you would feel in a big touring car or a sports car like the Porsche 911. The posture is low, leaving your legs with little knee flexion. I liked this feeling, because in the end it's about that, about sportsmanship. Right in front of my eyes is digital instrumentation, an information that you will see through a 12.3-inch screen. Navigating in it you can access a good number of sections, also see the driving modes, which will change the view of it.
The front seats are enough to accommodate a person of 1.85 meters. Despite this I have seen the ceiling too close, so I can not tell you that they are equal to spacious with 1.90 meters. What I am completely sure of is that in the two rear seats you will not be able to take your friends. It has not been easy to introduce myself to them, although it has been more complicated to find space for my head. I have given up and left as soon as possible. States two places are practically testimonial, not being suitable for two adults. For this we must wait for the BMW 8 Series Gran Coupe.
If we talk about trunk we find a trunk quite profitable. Its forms are not the best, but its capacity of 420 liters is better than that of a Mercedes S-Class Coupé. It is also more so than that of a Porsche 911 or a Lexus LC, with more space than a Bentley Continental GT and almost as much as a Ferrari GTC4 Lusso.
The BMW 8 Series has so far two engines available. We find both a diesel and a gasoline, both being very powerful. The BMW 840d xDrive is a 3.0-liter, six-cylinder diesel that develops 320 horsepower. Accelerates from 0-100 km/h in less than five seconds and declares an average consumption of 5.9 l/100 km. The most powerful version is the BMW M850i xDrive, a car that has a powerful 4.4-liter V8 engine that develops 530 hp. The acceleration test leaves us a time of 3.7 seconds, with an average consumption of 10 l/100 km.
As you can read, the two versions available mount the all-wheel drive of the xDrive brand. Of course, the total traction system sends 100% of the torque to the rear wheels if the conditions of adhesion are optimal. In addition, they have the eight-speed automatic transmission. The price output of the BMW 840d xDrive is 112,600 euros, while that of the BMW M850i xDrive is 140,400 euros.The BMW M8 will use a V8, a decision that justifies the loss of dynamics that this would generate. Despite this justification, a well-founded answer, the absence of V12 engines leaves the Series 8 one step below.
No lack of technology
The technological level the BMW 8 Series is up to the task, of course. The BMW sports car has four-wheel steering, active stabilizer bars and polymer-reinforced carbon fiber roof among other optional elements. It also highlights the active speed programmer, the alert for involuntary lane departure or the parking assistance system. Driving aids we see in the brand's latest releases.
